"How do you select your sermon topics?" is a common question I often get asked. In order to cover the whole Bible, I follow what is called the Lectionary. The Lectionary is a three-year cycle of scriptural study that is used for worship planning. For each Sunday, the Lectionary provides a selected reading from the Old Testament, New Testament, A Psalm and an Epistle (letter from Paul). From these readings I select two texts on which I base the worship service and my sermon.
Using the Lectionary helps me to grow in my knowledge of the scriptures and keeps me from preaching my favorite texts over and over again; this ensures that we're learning, sharing, and growing together.
